waxSing Lyrical

I opened my first singing teaching business 'You Can Sing!' in Brighton in 1996 and have been helping people to find their voice ever since.

The focus of my sessions is to help you discover your voice and the joy that singing can bring to your life, enhancing your health and wellbeing.

Being a technically adept singer isn't necessarily the aim of my sessions (although you may find you become one in the process!) but about helping you to relax and uncover your voice.

I teach both private sessions (30, 45 or 60 minutes) as well as group lessons (see below for pricing).

Both lessons are tailored to support everyone, from complete beginners to the most competent of singers.

I'll find out a little bit about you first and what you are looking for in a singing lesson, and then we can decide on whether a private lesson or one of the group sessions would suit you best (though of course feel free to just go ahead and book one if you already know which you'd prefer).

It really is down to the individual as there are benefits to both styles of teaching.

Privates will obviously be tailor made to you, whereas group classes have more community and the added bonus to learn from others (sometimes it's easier to see the progression in another student than in ourselves!).  Both will require you to decide on a song you would like to work on.  This can be of any genre or style (though I can help with this if preferred).

If I feel a song is too easy for your voice I may make a suggestion to try something more challenging, but at the end of the day, your lesson is your lesson so it needs to be something you enjoy singing and are

comfortable with.

Group classes also have an option to choose a duet/trio/quartet if preferred, so long as you are comfortable getting together with the other members to practice in-between sessions.

I create a safe space for people to have fun whilst stepping outside of their comfort zones giving them the freedom to experiment with their voice, so the only criteria is that there is no judgement, of ourselves or of others, as soon as you step through the door.  Whilst in class I adopt a policy of kindness and support to

your fellow vocalists!

I am fully aware how scary coming to a first (or even subsequent) lesson can feel, so please feel free to let me know of any inhibitions or fears that you have, and don't let it stop you giving it a go.

Even the most confident people can feel hugely challenged at the prospect of singing, and feel quite exposed and vulnerable leading up to a lesson.  You may not be feeling like this, and ready to break the door down and get cracking, but rest assured if you do... this is COMPLETELY normal!

You would be amazed at how many people come to their first lesson stating that they 'can't sing' or 'have no singing talent', and then leave the first session on a complete high having completely broken down this belief and having a whole new relationship to their voice.

Past pupils have said my unique way of teaching immediately put them at ease and got results far beyond what they had expected.

If you would like to join a group class but can't make the timings offered, feel free to still drop me a line as new classes are added all the time dependant on demand.

Whether you're a beginner, a professional, or somewhere in between, if you're looking for some coaching, I would love to help you on your vocal voyage.

No two lessons are ever the same, because no two people are the same!

NB I also provide pre-grouped lesson packages.

A little bit about me...

As well as teaching I work as an actor and voiceover artist.

I've sung in acapella groups, rock bands, duos, musicals and choirs

as both a lead and backing vocalist, and as a session singer.

I've always loved singing, and find it hard not to harmonise when a song comes on (much to the horror of my daughter when it's her music!), but when you gotta sing you gotta sing...

plus I do love a good karaoke!

Here's what some previous pupils have said...

'Heather shares a wealth of singing experience and her lessons are always fun and enjoyable.

She has helped me a lot over the years, taking my voice to places I didn’t know it could go.

I take the stage now with great confidence using the tools that Heather gave me.

Thoroughly recommended!'

John P, Isleworth

'Heather is a dear a Soul with immense talent and magical musical gifts and embellished with gentleness, sensitivity, great fun and focus. Elegantly and eloquently guiding and leading one atuned to their bespoke journey all rolled into a truly fine singing teacher was Heather when I found her. She escorted me on far more than my lessons at that time, without even knowing, such is her Essence.

I am truly delighted and honoured to highly recommend Heather'

Kazy V, Brighton

'Heather is a fantastic teacher - she's the kind of woman that has an energy to bring the music out of you.

I highly recommend Heather as for many years I was shy to sing in front of others but she has such a warm presence and personality that it was easy to open up and sing to her.

She has singing techniques and warm ups that work ever so well

and she only pushes you out of your comfort zone if you are okay with it.

I would definitely go to Heather again!'

Ava E, Carshalton

'Heather is a fantastic teacher, incredibly patient; building each lesson to the individual needs of her students to boost confidence and create the perfect sound. She creates a friendly, fun, and nonjudgmental environment to learn how to harness your voice to sing with pride and enjoyment.

100 stars if possible!'

Miah C, Bristol

'Only started vocal lessons and i can already  see the difference💫💜

Heather is a lovely person.Highly recommended'

Connie C, Carshalton

'My son attended singing and piano lessons with Heather.

He says: Heather is lovely, very kind and helpful. I enjoyed my lessons very much.'

Emma O, Carshalton

'I highly recommend Heather as a singing teacher, she is friendly, supportive and extremely knowledgeable about singing and can make even the shyest singer (which was me) find their voice and learn to unlock their confidence. Her approach is really unique and I think that helps you to become the singer you want to be. When I struggled with my confidence hitting a note she broke things down for me in a way that made me less focused on what I felt I couldn’t do and it helped me with cracking notes or sounds. I even enrolled my daughter with her and she had gone from strength to strength. Thank you Heather!'

Racheal E, Carshalton

'So very pleased I have found Heather as she is the perfect singing teacher for me I am dyslexic, and learning new skills can be difficult for me, but Heather‘s patience and creative ways of teaching. Are helping me realise a dream of mine to find my voice, And develop the confidence to sing thank you so much Heather'
